J.Crew Sale Strategy {retrain the customer?}

A fellow JCA, Bug Pin (in this post), mentioned something very interesting that I thought was worth sharing:

OT. Call me crazy but I think J Crew is finally trying a new tactic of offering smaller numbers of inventory at retail plus an across the board discount of 25% off and it is working! So many things are sold out or close to it. I've never seen anything like it before. If this is truly their plan (meaning, things aren't going to come back fully restocked in a couple weeks) we just might not see the major sale sections and might have to change the "I'll just wait for sale or percent off sale" mentality that so many have grown accustomed to (often through pure frustration that paying full price is never worth it.) Interesting.  

This is an insightful take on J.Crew's current customer strategy when it comes to pricing. I also believe Bug Pin theory is exactly what J.Crew is trying to do!

How many of us (myself included), find we will wait for an item to go on sale because we know it will *always* go on sale? How many of us (again, myself included), find we will wait for an item to go on sale with an additional percent off because we know there is an additional percent off just around the corner?

J.Crew must have figured it out themselves, (that customers don't mind waiting for a lower price,) as they looked at the Sale Section. Day after day, there are over 1,000 items available for sale in the Women's section alone. (A few years ago, we would rarely see 1,000+ sale items. 800+ would seem like a lot.) With each new roll out now, it means more past-season items to go on sale.

However, as Bug Pin pointed out, J.Crew has started to offer the 25%-off-regular-and-sale-priced-items-too promo more frequently with new roll outs. Coupled with items "selling out" or on "backorder", it creates a feeling in J.Crew customers that they should "buy now".

And let's talk about whether an item is really "selling out". I am surprised to see so many items that are new (as in the first day they "go live"), with the "backordered / ship date" message. Are these items really selling out or did J.Crew just offer a super-limited number to begin with to create some buzz? Because I see most of those same items are sitting on shelves at my local store... (Granted there are those items that really do sell out quickly like Factory's Herringbone Excursion Vest, but I am not so sure about all of them. I remember a certain sweater selling out online and no one was buying it at my local store.)

What are your thoughts on J.Crew's pricing strategy for customers? Do you think J.Crew is trying to re-train its base of fans?

It is nice to see that J.Crew brought back an additional percent off their sale online and in stores. It is especially nice that over 100 new items made it to the sale section. Wahoo!

As many of us have noticed and commented, we are not sure why J.Crew has not dropped prices or offered a deeper percent off Final Sale since there is *so* much merchandise (and the same kind of merchandise) just sitting around.

This is really a great promotion but... I think I am all shopped out. This doesn't mean I don't love the Fall offerings, because there really are so many lovely things. The SEPTEMBER catalog (click here to view) is now available to view. However, the latest OCTOBER catalog is not. (Check your mailbox as it is being sent via snail mail to customers!)

J.Crew is also offering customers to take an additional 25% off SITEWIDE with promo code SHOPFALL. Yey! This code expires September 25, 2013. J.Crew is also offering free shipping with every order (no min!). This offer is for today only, and is automatically applied at checkout.

My top pick is the Jeweled Chandelier Sweatshirt (item 04967; $168.00) in Athletic Grey Ivory. It's both casual and decadent. Who knew a sweatshirt with some jewels could look this gorgeous?!

I am also loving the Houndstooth Baseball Cap (item 06199; $58.00) in Navy Loden. J.Crew has done a great job dressing up this basic item into a chic accessory.

Questionable Item of the Week: Paint Splattered Khakis

Over at J.Crew's 770 bog, there was a post featuring photos from their recent Spring / Summer 2013 Collection.  Among the images there was a pair of pants covered in paint that caught my eye: the Paint Splattered Army Green Khakis.

J.Crew loves to offer variations of "pants with paint" every year. What I want to know is why? Why is J.Crew still producing khakis with random paint marks on them? Who is even buying them? If someone is buying them, are they doing it ironically? Are customers purchasing the pants really styling them with high heels and an evening bag?

Remember that scene in "Mean Girls" where Rachel McAdams' character says, "stop trying to make fetch happen". (Click here to watch over at YouTube.) I feel like someone needs to do this with J.Crew's paint pants.

What are your thoughts on the Paint Splattered Army Green Khakis? Would you buy this or leave it at the store? Have you see this first hand, and if so, what are your impressions?

Okay... I was a bit worried from the sneak peek in the "Sneak Peek: J.Crew's October 2013 Catalog {thanks ..." post. However, I am now super excited about the upcoming new arrivals. So much eye candy!!! Should have never doubted J.Crew's Fall Collection! ;)
